Which test is better TOEFL or IELTS?
If you are ambitious to study overseas for pursuing higher studies, it becomes essential for you to score high in the GRE. Apart from this, there are a few more factors that you should know that ensure you higher chances of getting enrolled for further studies such as the field’s practical contribution, research experience, and language test. In most universities, the language test is compulsory because they check your English proficiency (in case you do not belong to an English-speaking country) as well as comprehension skills through the test. IELTS and TOEFL are two major language tests that are accepted worldwide.
If your basic concept of the language is clear, then you can easily score well on those tests. Before appearing in the test, you should work on your reading, writing, speaking, and learning abilities. In IELTS, general and academics are the two modes of the test.
What is IELTS?
IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is a language-based test that has been conducted globally across more than 140 countries. In both academic & general training sections, the speaking and the listening tests are the same but different in the reading and the writing tests. All the segments should be complete within a single day strictly in 2 hours & 45 minutes. There are two modes of conducting the tests, on both papers as well as on the computer. In general terms, the test is conducted in different categories such as academic writing, listening, general training reading, general training writing, and general training speaking. It is easy to read your IELTS score. They are detailed on a scale ranging between 1 and 9. 1 is considered as the lowest. The scores are cogent for two years and can be flexible according to the university’s guidelines. Nearly 3.5 million students appeared for the IELTS, according to last year’s research. Both IELTS and TOEFL shares similar nature.
What is TOEFL?
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a competent and effective test that has been accepted in more than 150 countries. In these countries, over 11 thousand universities witness the test as university work, study & immigration across Europe and Asia. The test is divided into different categories i.e. TOEFL ITP, TOEFL Junior, TOEFL primary, and TOEFL research.
Which test to select?
Before opting test, there is a need to understand the concepts better which apart from the benefits, includes dilemmas too. The pattern of both the tests differ from each other. TOEFL consists of MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) whereas IELTS has a mixture of short and essay questions. Four hours are given to complete the TOEFL IBT and as earlier mentioned, 2 hours 45 minutes for IELTS.
Unlike the time scale, the score scale differs from one another in both the tests. Whereas TOEFL scores are measured on a scale of 0 to 120, IELTS scores are assessed on a scale of zero to nine. You must give your best to each test because the scores are given on an average basis which means if you do not perform well in one segment, your best score from the other segment will be taken to calculate your average score. But in the case of TOEFL, each section grades ranges from 0 to 30. In addition, they provide you a report based on your performance along with your result.
Talking about the speaking segment of the test, you can without hesitation choose IELTS in case you do not feel comfortable talking with the real interviewer in place of a computer-integrated system. It is conducted on an individual basis and takes approximately 11 to 14 minutes.
Before coming to any conclusion, opt for the test in which you feel comfortable and keeping up the confidence of clearing it in a single attempt because both tests evaluate communication skills along with quality proficiency.

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
