Telangana :First-year MBBS students review
The students who are in the first year MBBS programme from different colleges of Telangana assembled at the Osmania Medical College to protest on 19th August, 2022. The students have claimed that the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), under which all the Telangana medical colleges are associated, has been biased with them.
The medical aspirants protested that they have secured less marks in the examination and majority of them have failed to qualify the exam due to difficult question paper and assessment. A first year student from Gandhi Medical College of Telangana proclaimed that they had visited their VC regularly to request for re-checking or giving them another opportunity to take the exam but the request had been declined. He added that majority of them had presented well in the exam but the low marks were unpredicted. Many claimed that they were unable to qualify the exam just because of one mark.
He also added that most of the students were unhappy as they were the batch that started during COVID-19 pandemic and were unable to take part in practical examination. Moreover, the question paper set by the college was not according to NMC norms.
In accordance with the students, NMC has guided that the question paper will only include 5 marks short answer type questions as well as 10 question altogether. The time for the exam is of 2.5 hours. However, the students had received 20 questions of long-answer type which were of 15 marks each and received 3 hours to complete the examination.
The students claimed that when they reached their respective colleges to speak on that issue, the college authorities asked them to get connected with KNRUHS. On the other hand, KNRUHS requested the students to have a talk with their respective colleges. At last, the students decided to meet Health Minister of Telangana, Harish Rao. He assured that he will tell the VC to reschedule the examination but no exam took place. This is the main reason for the enhancement of the protest.
In addition, the students called attention to the fact that Andhra Pradesh, the neighbouring state, had followed the norms of NMC to prepare the exam papers. The students of that state also scored well in their medical exams. The students of Telangana were put at risk of repeating on year.
In the meantime, a member of Telangana’s Senior Resident Doctors’ Association, Dr Karthik, said that, the university should think about the predicament of the students. Almost, 30 MBBS students of first year protested but the marks affect more about 350 students. KNRUHS is not prompt with the examination schedules. The PG students also get affected due to late release of schedule. The authorities are not helpful as well. He also said that the students along with their parents had visited the VC with regard to the less arks but they were avoided.

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
