NEET 2021 TOPPER: STUDIED 4 HOURS/DAY, BINGE-WATCHED NETFLIX AND YET SCORED 720/720
Mrinal Kutteri, NEET 2021 topper has scored 720/720 and topped the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET). AIR Rank 1 holder, Mrinal Kutteri, had an interesting and novel approach to studying for the examination. He claims to have spent most of his time binge-watching series on Netflix or Amazon Prime and accorded just 4 hours to studying, with interval breaks every 45 minutes.
For Mrinal, it was unable to follow a fixed pattern of studying or study 10-12 hours/day, like most toppers claim to do. For him, the series provided a sort of motivation. He has said that he used to get quite intimidated whenever he heard previous toppers claim that they studied for hours at stretch in order to crack the exams. He has also expressed how, due to the pandemic, at first, his mobile phone or laptop used to act as a distractor but it eventually got better with time.
Apart from the preparation, Mrinal had a distinctive approach while attempting the examination as well. Usually students, appearing for NEET, tend to attempt the Biology section first. But Mrinal attempted the Physics section first, as he claims that he thought he’d do Physics justice if he had ample time and considered Biology easy enough to attempt even in less time, and well, it worked.
Mrinal also gave a word of advice to fellow and future candidates that there is no universal method of preparation that works for everyone. Each individual is unique and their capacity and way of learning is also unique to them. He gave his own example that other toppers studied for 10-12 hours but that didn’t work for him and so he developed his own of studying, which suited him and his learning style. He claims that anyone who is appearing or planning to appear for such exams should experiment and develop their own way of preparation through trial and error. He has also mentioned that even though CBSE class 12 Boards and NEET have more or less the same source, he scored 88.6% in his boards and yet topped the NEET as his strength lies in objective questions and that he doesn’t do well on subjective questions.
Mrinal began his preparation for NEET in his class 11 in 2020. As the COVID-19 pandemic hit, people were forced inside their homes and so was the learning medium. During the pandemic, Mrinal saw people depending heavily on doctors as their last resort and this motivated him even further to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor and work even harder to secure an admission in his dream institute, which is AIIMS, New Delhi.
Along with two other students, Mrinal scored the top marks and was overcome with a multitude of emotions to find on his score card – AIR Rank 1. He also mentioned that he feels glad that AIIMS and JIPMER didn’t conduct different entrance exams, like they usually do. Even though this made NEET 2021 an all or nothing exam, Mrinal was happy that it worked for him.

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
