MBBS 2022 : Government seats more than private seats
For the third year in a row, the quantity of MBBS slots in government institutions has remained larger than in private schools, increasing optimism that medical education may become more accessible to a broader segment of society.
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated in a written statement to the Lok Sabha on Friday that there are 91,927 MBBS seats in 2022-23, with 48,212 in government medical institutions and 43,915 in private colleges – a disparity of 4,297 seats.
A similar pattern was observed in 2021-22 and 2019-20, when government colleges provided almost 4,000 additional seats than private universities.
Such a tendency may make medical education more accessible to a broader segment of the population, and some MBBS graduates may choose to work in taluka level hospitals, according to Oommen Kurian, a Senior Fellow there at Observer Research Foundation who works on health policy problems, told DH.
In 2020-21 and 2019-20, the majority of government medical seats were 43,435 and 42,222, respectively, compared to 39,840 and 38,090 in the private industry.
Better infrastructure and additional seats in the government sector can help overcome some of the gaps in doctor availability that now exist in local and global cities or villages, Kurian added.
As of June 2022, India had 13,08,009 medicinal physicians certified also with National Medical Commission. With an availability rate of 80%, there are only roughly 10.5 lakh physicians for India’s 140 million people. This is less than the WHO guideline of a doctor-patient ratio of 1:1000.
Mandaviya stated that the Centre has authorized 3,495 more slots in government medical institutions across 16 states, including 550 in Karnataka.
Despite the expected expansion, the quantity of MBBS seats in Karnataka government colleges is approximately half that of the private sector.
There are 6,995 MBBS places in the private industry in Karnataka, compared to 3,150 in public universities.
Karnataka is the only state in the top five with the most undergraduate medical seats, with far more seats in the private industry.
The seats in the government are more or less equally balanced or higher in the other four states – Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
