MBA India or MBA Abroad: What’s your best bet?
It is that time of the year when forms are out, dates are being declared, and everyone is offering one piece of advice or another.
To many, going abroad for an MBA sounds really tough and more importantly, extremely expensive.
So, what is a better choice? MBA at home or MBA abroad? If IIMs are not reachable, then is there a B-School in the US better than a Private University in India?
Beginning with the most basic point of contention, that is of the MBA Aptitude tests; you would be required to write the GMAT is you are aiming for Universities abroad. If, on the other hand, you are aiming for top universities in India CAT is the preferred exam though many top Indian MBA Colleges do accept a GMAT score as well.
Both the exams have their pros and cons. The biggest positive of a GMAT over CAT is that it is widely accepted across the world. It is quite flexible too. For instance, you can write GMAT up to 5 times a year to try and improve your score. From those attempts, only your best score is selected. The test also lets you pick a date as against a common entrance test date for CAT.
Both exams are standardized and have almost the same level of difficulty. CAT, however, is far cheaper as compared to the GMAT exam. Also, CAT opens the door for all Indian Universities while GMAT scores are acceptable only at the few, very top colleges of India.
Hence, considering both the exams and which is more acceptable to you is the first point of effective decision making.
If you are willing to aim for only the top most B-Schools, you should go for GMAT. Yes, it will cost you more but it will open up both International as well as the top-most national colleges for you. It would be wiser, though, to decide whether a top university abroad is worth a top university in India.
If you are not aiming for the very top universities, you should read on further to reach a conclusion.
Top B-Schools Abroad vs Top B-Schools in India
A Top B-school in India is very different from a Top B-School Abroad and that is true, no matter how confusing it may sound. While both colleges offer excellent future prospects, the admission process for them is widely varied and different.
The biggest difference being Work Experience.
If you are seeking the best management degree from the best B-school in the world, you need 3 things: Excellent Academic record, a great score and relevant work experience.
Top Universities often demand a minimum 4 years of work experience. In India, though the requirement is not the same. While work experience does help, you can aim for the best college straight after college.
Another major difference comes in terms of the Exposure offered. Most of the top universities in the country have exchange programs, and offer you the advantage of finding better opportunities abroad.
There is something else that Top Universities abroad offer: The Name. For many people, the name matters a lot.
If you want to move to a top management position and work with top names and Fortune 500 companies, these top universities abroad offer you a direct ticket due to their name and prestige.
For entrepreneurship purposes too, these universities are better suited as Universities abroad have a steady stream of Venture Capitalists.
It is important to remember here, that the difference in costs are phenomenal. But at the end of the day, what matters most is the Return on your investment.
Other MBA Colleges in India vs Mid-level MBA Colleges Abroad
Now, we have reached a completely different premise. And here, the answer is obvious. If you can afford it, a mid-level university abroad is better than an MBA from private colleges of India simply because the return on your investment is better.
In fact, some of the universities abroad may even offer you much cheaper options. For instance, an MBA from Germany would cost you comparatively less and also give you the added advantage of studying abroad.
Also, Estonia and other Baltic states offer you an MBA at almost the same cost. Maybe a bit higher at times, but the fact remains that you can enter a top universities in Estonia or one of the state universities in Germany.
So, it is extremely important to decide where you do your MBA from, in accordance with your capabilities.
Before you enrol for any exams, we urge you to take a thorough look at many universities abroad and compare them with their Indian counterparts, and if possible, opt and aim for the university abroad.

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
