Earlier there were very rare students who used to take a year gap for better preparation. But in the recent years there is an increase in the number of the students who take a year drop.
There are many reasons for which the gap is taken by the students. The gap can be taken just after completing the high school and before taking admission into an undergraduate course. Students in India take year drop mainly when they have to prepare for some entrance tests such as NEET etc. The year gap will help them to prepare well for the exams as they are free to study without any type of work load from their college. Students are of a mind set that they have to appear for a national level exam so they take a year gap to get fully prepared. It has been observed that that many students take up internships or volunteering after their undergraduate studies.
Yes, the study gap is acceptable in Canada. Canada universities are flexible with the long study gaps taken by the international students. As per the rules of the universities, a study gap for 2 years is acceptable for the applicants of undergraduate courses. On other hand, a study gap of 5 years is acceptable for the applicants of postgraduate courses. But there are many cases where the students have done really well in a particular field so in such cases, they need to show some proof for their study gap. This proof can be in the form of a salary slip or appointment letter.
The best thing about the education system of Canada is that they motivate their students to get involved in other activities also. They need to explore everything around them and learn in the real world. So, a study gap must provide some beneficial results at the end. For this, Canada universities allow the study gap so that the students get adjusted to the study pattern of the country.
The study gap has its own pros and cons. It is observed that the student who take study gap perform better than the students who do not take the study gap. But the question rises that whether such study gap effects the flow of gaining education.
In the 1960s the study gap was observed for the first time when the young students wanted to come out of the old ways of studying of their parent’s generation. The main aim was to have exchange of the cultural ideas so that there are no more wars in the future. The first gap year organisation was opened in Worcester, Massachusetts named as Dynamy. The main purpose of the organisation was to teach students importance of self -confidence and their important role in the large communities.
In India, there are many exams such as NEET/JEE/AIPMT for which student take year gap to prepare well. However, there are many exams such as TOEFL/IELTS/GMAT/CAT which are given for taking admission to abroad. Students also take year gap for preparation of these exams as there is high level competition for taking admission into foreign universities.
If you are planning to study in Canada then you must know that there is requirement of study permit to study in Canada. It will be issued when the students arrive Canada. The student requires the temporary resident VISA which is provided by the Canadian High Commission. You have to give valid passport, proof of acceptance by a recognised university, passport size photos, proof of financial support, immigration medical examination, English proficiency test scores, statement of purpose, credit card details for a Canadian VISA. Remember that Canada accepts the students with study gap of 2 years for undergraduate courses and 5 years for post graduate courses. However, the years if study gap may vary from university to university.
There are some universities who can accept such applications if the reason for the study is reliable and genuine. Many people take study gap for preparation of exam or any job. But if your reason is true and acceptable then the university can consider your application.
People applying for student VISA with gap of more than 5 years may face some problem. If they have appropriate reason then can also get the student VISA.
There are many reasons which the students give for their year gap. These reasons can be educational, personal or medical also. If we talk about the educational reason, it can be low scores in class 10th or 12th. Personal reasons can be any family problem due to which he or she have to drop studies. There can be some health issues which took long time to get cured due to which the student cannot his or her education.
These are the reasons due to which student with 5-6-year gap are also getting VISA approvals. Sometimes students with less study gap may not get approval as they do not have a solid explanation for their study gap.
There are many education counsellors who suggest that students should apply in the college and get the acceptance before taking a gap year. The students then have the option of working on improvement of their scores or moving ahead with the college.
If a student has taken a gap year then he might need to apply again for the financial aid. However, the scholarships remain with the student until they join the college again.
The college admission officials are quite comfortable in accepting the applications of the students who have taken study gap. They always support the idea of study gap for the existing students also. There is a case where around 107 of 1665 Harvard students took a gap year and results for it were quite good. So, we can say that taking a study gap is not a bad option if you are willing to work hard and improve your performance.

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
