In Punjab, thousand await study permit after 10 Canadian colleges face admission scrutiny
Jashanjeet Singh (name changed) took admission to an administration course last year in Matrix College in Montreal, Quebec. As he wanted to travel to Canada for the second semester after finishing the semester 1 online but his travel was rejected due to the provincial government there had suspended 10 colleges. The list included Matrix College. With the suspension, the specialists also quit giving Quebec Acceptance Certification (QAC), which is a record that is needed by the international students to get study permit. The QAC ban became effective last year December.
Jashanjeet said that, “Later suspension was lifted and the process of giving student permit was allowed. In any case, despite of that our applications for QAC have been pending… The Canadian government is requesting an ever-increasing number of documents from us including the details about the funding proof, sponsors, future plans etc.”
“I have already paid the fee for a hole year and finished one semester and now if I want to change college or province, I do not know that if they will refund for one semester’s fee or not, because in some other college that course which I am pursuing may not be their right now,” he also said that their will be a loss for over 4 lakh that was the tuition fee for semester one.
Nikita from Jalandhar, who took confirmation in a software engineering course, is also stuck as her college was in the list of the barred 10 institution.
She had paid around Rs 8 lakh educational expense for the first year and is currently sitting tight for her travel permit.
“Students who have applied to universities in other provinces along with us are getting permission to travel when the fights get resume, however our future is in question and the public authority should take care of these colleges or refund our money with the goal that we can apply in the educational institutes of different areas of Canada,” she said.
Balwinder Singh, who had enlisted for the January admission in one such college, hasn’t got his QAC either.
Like these students, there are hundreds who are stuck due to picking these 10 colleges for further studies in Canada. These 10 universities are private establishments in Montreal have landed in trouble for alleged wrong practices in the admission of international students.
Consultants associated with sending students to Canada said that these colleges are taking classes for only 2-3 days every week and the rest od the days students can work.
“These colleges total required study hours — 20 hours in seven days — in 2-3 days for taking classes for long classes, and afterward students are allowed to work for the remaining days of the week,” said an advisor.
“To fit the bill for to study in Montreal, which has countless private and junior colleges, a candidate should get in general 6 groups in four modules (talking, writing, listening and reading) of IELTS, remembering 6 groups for three modules each and 5.5 groups in a single module, yet the vast majority of these 10 organizations were tolerating by and large 6 groups and 5.5 groups in two of the four modules,” educated another advisor who has been sending students to Canada on study visas for over 10 years.
“Also, there was a rise in the admission in these universities — in any event, 9 to 10 times more than expected, which drove the provincial government to investigate the admission practices of these college,” said another specialist.
Another advisor said that in private universities the charge is less and the commission of the agent, who works with the colleges to get more students admitted, is more as they get around 20 to 25 percent of the expense.
Despite Covid-19, around 40,000 to 50,000 students from Punjab have been waiting to fly to Canada since April this year, when the travel was cancelled.
As of now, the resumption of flights has been deferred till July 31. Consultant said that governments of both India and Canada should permit the students, who have taken even a single dose of vaccine to fly.

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
