In Punjab MBBS is getting costlier and no initiative to reduce fee-hike?
Education in medicine is becoming costlier with rapid increase of 5% in the fee of MBBS programme in private as well as government colleges in the state of Punjab. Rahul Gupta who is the additional secretary of the department of medical education and research has stated about the edited version of the fee structure for taking admission in MBBS and BDS courses for the year 2022.
The reason for so less number of doctors in India is the expense for studying medicine. The one who succeeds in becoming a doctor, work in health facilities which are private in India or go abroad. This has backed the capable but poor students to study medicine. This has led to inequality in rural and urban areas.
In the year of 2020, the Congress Government in Punjab has hiked the fee of MBBS in state run colleges of medicine to about 78% which ranges from Rs.4.4 lakh to Rs. 7.81 lakh for the session 2019-2020. This fee structure will be reviewed again after 5 years.
The successive hikes in fee for two years in government colleges of medicine at Amristar, Faridkot and Patiala which was Rs. 7.82 lakh. It has increased to Rs. 8.2 lakh for the entire course. This increase in fee made it difficult for poor students study medicine.
After the end in disparity, the department of medical education and research has stated about the uniform structure of fee in private medical colleges. For the last two years the fee hike is Rs. 4.90 for the seats of management quota and Rs. 1.90 for the seats of government quota in private colleges of medicine in DMC (Dayanand Medical College) and also Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences at Jalandhar.
According to the new notification, the course fee for MBBS was Rs50.10 lakh for a seat in management quotain private colleges in medicine in 2020. This has been increased to Rs. 52.60 lakh. Moreover, for a government seat the fee has been revised to Rs. 18.55 lakh to RRs. 19.48 lakh and then to Rs. 20.45 lakh. Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences, Amristar can charge a fee of Rs. 52.60 lakh for both open as well as minority quota.
Moreover, the fee for Adesh Medical University, Bathinda hhas decided to write petition in the high court of Haryana and Punjab. On the other hand, the Christian Medical College, Ludhiana has not altered the fee structure.
The financial burden on students will provide a massive impact on the doctor quality said by the former vice-chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS).

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
