In a surprising turn of events, the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM-L), has reached out to its extensive alumni network for assistance in securing job placements for 72 students who have not yet received job offers. The institute, renowned for maintaining a 100% placement record in the past, is grappling with a situation where a significant number of its graduates face employment uncertainties.
The call for help was highlighted by Ravi Handa, an alumnus of IIM-Lucknow, who shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp message he received from the institute. The message specifically urged ex-students from the 2011 batch to leverage their “unique connections and networks” to aid in finding job opportunities for the 72 students currently without placements.
In a tweet, Mr. Handa emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “IIM Lucknow is reaching out to alumni to help them with placements. It is crucial to maintain the legacy of IIM Lucknow’s 100% placement record.” He pointed out that the issue is not isolated to a small number of individuals, but rather a substantial 72 candidates at IIM-L who are currently without job prospects. Mr. Handa’s tweet shed light on the broader implications, suggesting that the situation at IIM-L could be indicative of challenges faced by other business schools.
The institute’s message to its alumni reads, “We are writing to address the current situation regarding unplaced students from our batch. Currently, 72 talented individuals are seeking employment opportunities. We are reaching out to our alumni of the 2011 Batch for assistance. We understand that everyone has unique connections and networks, and we are hopeful that you may be able to help in placing our students.”
The message further appeals, “If you are aware of any job opportunities or have connections within your professional network that align with the skill sets of our 2024 batchmates, please consider referring them or informing us about potential openings.”
Mr. Handa’s subsequent tweet highlighted the significance of IIM Lucknow in the academic landscape, stating, “For those who don’t know, IIM Lucknow is one of the old IIMs and is often considered to be one of the top 5 colleges in the country. They have alums over decades who are in extremely powerful positions. They can and will help.”
The situation at IIM-L has sparked discussions on social media platforms, with individuals expressing shock at the development. Some attributed the challenges to the current economic climate, acknowledging that many business schools, including IIM-C and IIM-B, are facing similar concerns. A user remarked, “Every B-School is facing the same situation; people from IIM-C and IIM-B are also worried about it.”
Another comment reflected on the tough market conditions, stating, “The market is tough right now. Hope these people take it as an opportunity though, I feel you become the best version of yourself only when you are down and out.”
A third comment shed light on the broader job market trends, noting, “Not an MBA, but the job market is completely down since September. Things are opening up a bit but not much.”
This unexpected development at IIM-L highlights the challenges that even premier institutions face in navigating the complexities of the current job market. The institute’s proactive approach in reaching out to its alumni network underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in supporting graduates during challenging times. As the situation unfolds, it will be interesting to observe how the alumni community and the broader business ecosystem respond to this appeal, and whether it sparks a broader conversation about the dynamics of job placements in the post-pandemic era.

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
