Education in medicine in the USA differs quite a lot from the education system of the commonwealth nations like India, thus, a course like MBBS does not exist. A student finishing school is simply not eligible for a professional degree in the field of medicine. This implies that all students need to pursue a preliminary course in life sciences before taking the exam for an MD programme in USA – the first level of professional degree.
This leaves Indian students with two options – either they complete their preliminary education in USA after 12th or they opt to pursue a Bachelor’s in India while preparing to clear the entrance exam (called MCAT) for an MD programme in the America.
For students pursuing an education after 10+2 in USA, they can apply for a pre-medical course. Pre-med or BS programs generally consists of college level Science, Mathematics, Computer Skills, English, Behavioural and Humanity courses which are covered over a period of two years.
The eligibility criteria for the same is:
To get into a university offering pre-med, students need to clear the SAT exams. After receiving a SAT score, students can start applying to various universities across USA. An SAT score of 600-800 is considered competitive in the USA.
Students will also need to clear IELTS/TOEFL as a language proficiency proof to be presented to universities. The benchmark score varies from university to university and must be checked individually to aim accordingly.
Some of the most popular destinations include:
After having been accepted in a pre-med course, the students need to go through all the legalities. It is now time to apply for a visa. The best place to get the visa details and understand the process is to contact that US embassy or a consultancy services that will guide through the process. The visa process would generally include submitting photos, identity proofs, acceptance letter, and much more. Once the visa gets cleared, everything just happens naturally as a domino effect
A preliminary education in life sciences does not deem anyone to be a doctor. It is essential to clear MCAT to obtain a programme in MD (Doctor of Medicine). The MCAT exam is generally prepared for during the preliminary education and taken by the end of it. Once having cleared MCAT, students are then eligible for taking a 4 years long programme specializing in medicine with hands-on practical experience as a doctor.
MD also presents the option of either opting for a specialization in surgery or in physical medicine.
The journey of becoming a practising doctor in the USA does not end at completing a course in MD. It does not imply that graduates are eligible to be practising doctors. In order to do the same, near-graduates need to clear the common licensing exam called USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Exam).

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
