How to study in Canada with a scholarship?
The Canadian government provides several grants, scholarships, and awards to both public and private institutions. Make sure to review the requirements and deadline before applying for any of these grants. With approximately 1.8 lakh students studying there at different levels, Canada is among the most sought-after overseas study countries for Indian students. One of the primary requirements for receiving scholarships is academic achievement, but there are other requirements as well. Here is a list of government-funded bursaries available to foreign students in Canada. Universities offering financial aid include Dalhousie University, the University of Winnipeg, the University of Victoria, and the University of Manitoba. Scholarships are also available for students from other countries.
Vanier Graduate Scholarship
Doctoral students studying in fields like scientific knowledge, technological research, biomedical research, or humanities and social sciences research at Canadian universities are eligible to apply for this merit-based grant. It is conferred for a three-year period.
Rs 30,32,574 (approx) is the total amount.
Applicants must be put forward by a Canadian university that has a quota set aside to house Vanier scholars. Only the university where a candidate wishes to study should nominate them.
Banting Post Doctoral Fellowship
It is a postdoctoral scholarship awarded on a merit basis and has a two-year term. Indian students must be accepted to their chosen Canadian institution or college in order to participate in this program as fellows. If the applicant is given this fellowship, the PG degree won’t be handed out until after the fellowship has been completed successfully. The same university should award both degrees.
Rs 42,45,756 (approx) is the total amount.
Applicants must have earned a PG in social and environmental sciences or health research with honors to be eligible.
Shastri Research Student Fellowship
Students enrolled in recognized Indian institutions’ bachelor’s, master’s, and MPhil programs who want to carry out research in Canadian universities can apply for research-based aid.
Amount: Rs 30,737.88 (approximately) for a period of up to eight to twelve weeks, covering all costs not covered by the individual’s home university, including affiliated fees, registration fees, and costs linked to internet access, phone bills, software subscriptions, and other costs.
Qualifications: The candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree from a university or institution in India or Canada. The potential candidate must be listed as a postdoctoral fellow at a SICI member institution. A doctoral degree can be applied for, and requests must be submitted within 5 years of getting one.
Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan
Candidates from Commonwealth nations may compete for this merit-based award if they plan to pursue graduate or doctoral studies or study at these levels. The awardees living costs, travel costs, and tuition costs are all covered by the scheme.
Cost: Rs 8,23,765 for approximately 5 to 6 months. This sum includes Graduate Student Exchanges (GSEP), which provides students participating in an exchange program in Canada with $10,000 toward travel, housing, and other expenses. Candidates must be Indian citizens and under the age of 40 as of September 30th in order to be eligible. Applicants must have attended schools where English was the primary language.
The prerequisite for a Master’s degree is a first-class bachelor’s degree in engineering, medicine, architecture, or pharmacy. The minimum post-graduate requirement for Ph.D. programs is a high second class in the relevant discipline. Applicants should be fluent in either English or French, which are the two national languages of Canada. Applicants must be eligible for the TOEFL exam if their native language is not English and they want to attend a university where English is the official language of instruction.
This grant is available to Indian students who wish to study in Canada for a master’s or postdoctoral degree. Students are supported by this award for 1 year. Climate-Resilient Food Systems, Education and Science, Democratic and Inclusive Governance, Global Health, and Sustainable Inclusive Economies are the programs covered by this. Applicants may still submit their applications through February 1, 2023.
Amount: Rs 9,09,805 in travel and research assistance (approx)
Qualifications: PH.D. or PG in developed nations. Candidates must be enrolled in a Canadian university and possess a work visa good for 37.5 hours per week of full-time employment in Canada through 30 April 2024.
The provincial government offers funding for this annual award for Indian students in order to encourage success in masters and doctoral graduate courses. The rewards are valued at two-thirds by the government and one-third by the institution. A limited number of OGS awards are available for overseas students who are enrolled at the University of Toronto or intend to enroll there while holding a valid student study permit (student study licenses must be in place as of the OGS international submission deadline for graduate units).

Candidates must have received at least 80 percent on each of the prior 2 academic years’ exams to be eligible.
Ontario Trillium Scholarship
For Ph.D. students enrolling at universities in Ontario, the Ontario Trillium Scholarship is supported in a 2:1 ratio by the provincial government and the institution. This scholarship is available to 75 doctoral students each year, and it will be renewed if your Ph.D. program’s term is longer than a year.
