Students that just finished schooling or are about to have whatsoever no real exposure to the medical field and its prospective. The first step to taking a life-altering decision is to figure out whether the student wishes to study in India or abroad. The decision is to be taken before preparation because both the application process and, the course structure and curriculum differ from country to country. One must prepare as per the application process of a country and its pre-requisites. One of the most popular options among Indians for studying abroad in the United States of America, predominantly because of its English-speaking population, which most Indians are fluent in, and its economic well-being.
However, the curriculum of medicine and its pre-requisites are vastly different in the USA. India has adopted its education system from its British past, like several other commonwealth countries. The USA, having shared a different culture and history, has developed its own education system, unlike British colonies. The key aspects to look into before applying are:
Other aspects one may want to look into are climatic conditions, cultural barriers, and understanding the laws. Generally, these aspects do not become a hindrance and are usually looked at once a student has opted for applying to the country in the form of additional information.
In India, the average duration of an undergraduate program is 5.5 years, where the academic is distributed in 9 semesters with 1 year of rotatory internship. This program is popularly known as MBBS, which stands for Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and is the first professional level education in the country. Anyone graduating with an MBBS degree has the option to practice across the nation as a licensed doctor or study further.
The admissions in India happen through a national level exam known as NEET. This exam comprises of 180 questions with a total of 720 marks, where a minimum score of 500 is recommended. NEET is a three hours long exam divided into four sections – Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology.
In contrast to this, the first level of Education in the US is not its first professional degree. Before applying for medical sciences, popularly known as an MD (Doctor of Medicine), every applicant must have an additional four years of undergrad education post-schooling in relevant fields. This minimum four-year-long study is known as Pre-med education and does not deem the student to be a licensed doctor in the country. After pre-med, studying MD is also a four-year-long affair.
The admission in America is based on an MCAT exam. There are different versions of MCAT, where the total score ranges from 472-528. Most applicants should have a score of about 500-505. The marking system of MCAT is not similar to NEET and is not absolute. MCAT is a 7.5 hours long exam which is also divided into four sections – Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems; Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems; Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behaviour and; Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills.

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
