Details of New Medical Colleges in Tamil Nadu
For MBBS 2021 admissions, Tamil Nadu is to open up 17 more medical colleges, including Government and Private. With these new colleges, the state stands top in the list of medical seats available across the country itself. According to the report of National Medical Council in their website, Tamil Nadu offers 10,375 medical seats, including government and private institutions.
The report says that the state now has 37 government medical colleges, hooked with public hospitals. This includes 11 new medical colleges, introduced in the present year. The Medical Education Director of the state, Dr. K. Narayanababu informed that 11 new colleges were sanctioned for admission, under government in this year. Also, he said that the seat matrix in Coimbatore Medical College is increased with 50 more seats.
All these increase in seats will contribute 12% of the total government medical seats of the country in 2021. Also, it puts Tamil Nadu above all the states with 15% seats for All India Quota. The present health minister, Ma. Subramanian stated that the objective of the present government is to establish at least one medical college in every district of the state. He further stated that these medical colleges will contribute to rural healthcare in the state, along with providing quality education to the students. As per the details provided by government circles, they are planning to convert all district hospitals into education centers, attached with medical colleges. Also, it says that they are planning to make secondary care hospitals in every district, to avoid overcrowding in these medical colleges.
Furthermore, he stated that all undergraduate medical colleges will be upgraded to post graduate colleges within five years.

These self financing colleges, attached to Dr. MGR Medical University will provide 600 MBBS seats in total and the remaining both will give 150 seats each.
