Australia vs Canada- What’s right for me

Australia vs Canada- What’s right for me

Australia and Canada are the two former British colonies that have a lot in common with India with respect to democracy, a diverse society, and a vibrant economy. ‘The Land Down Under’ and ‘The Land of Maple’ have become ideal study destinations for international students because of its developed economies, welcoming citizens, state-of-the-art educational systems, healthcare, and balanced social life. Both the countries provide numerous opportunities for higher studies as well as for immigrating people looking for greener pastures. These countries happily welcome high skilled immigrants with open arms. But the Indian students face a great dilemma in choosing between Australia or Canada for pursuing higher education.

This blog is to help you in deciding the perfect choice that suits you. This decision usually depends on the kind of education you want, the type of climate you are suitable with, and the culture you want to mingle with. Now let us know about the two countries in brief.

Quality of Education

The two countries are almost equal in the quality of education. There are five Australian and two Canadian Universities in the top 50 QS World University Ranking 2020. Universities in Australia such as the Australian National University, University of Melbourne, University of Queensland, University of New South Wales, and the University of Sydney assure world-class education. Universities in Canada such as the University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, University of Alberta, McGill University, and the University of Montreal provide the best pedagogic systems in the world.

  • Affordability – Canada Vs Australia: When it comes to affordability of education, Canada is certainly best to choose. The average tuition fee for having a UG and a PG degree in Canada is ₹7 lakhs-₹21 lakhs and ₹11 lakhs-₹ 25 lakhs respectively. Whereas, the average tuition fee for having a UG and a PG degree in Australia is ₹11 lakhs- ₹23 lakhs and ₹14 lakhs-₹ 26 lakhs respectively.

  • Eligibility – Canada Vs Australia: Australia is obviously a great option as you are eligible with just 12 years of pre-university education while the admission process for UG courses in Canada requires an additional eligibility criteria where the candidates have to appear for SAT exams. Getting admissions for the PG courses in the Universities of Australia require a three-year UG degree for most programs except Engineering, which requires a four-year graduate degree. Also it is mandatory for you to appear for GMAT and GRE for getting into MBA and Science programs respectively. In Canadian universities, getting admissions in the PG courses does not demand a lot when it comes to professional courses. Yet it requires GMAT and GRE scorecards for MBA and science programs respectively. It is compulsory for you to take TOEFL or IELTS examinations.
  • Scholarships – Canada Vs Australia: Government of Canada as well as its universities present the international students with ample scholarships based on their merit, financial condition, achievements, etc. Scholarships provided in Canada include the Ontario Graduate Scholarship Program, Canada Asia-Pacific Awards, Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, National Research Council of Canada, and Quebec Provincial Government Scholarship among others. Universities in Australia including its government provide numerous scholarships in the form of grants, easy loans, and fellowships. Scholarships proffered by Australia include the Australian Awards Scholarship, Endeavour PostGraduate Scholarship Awards, University of Adelaide Ashok Khurana Scholarship for Indian Students, Australia Leadership Awards, and University of Sydney International Research Scholarship among others.

Cost of Education

The cost of education in the country depends on its standard of living indices. This can vary in each country depending on the region and its institutions. Besides the tuition fees, the cost of education also comprises the living expenses such as accommodation, transport, and food etc. The approximated cost of education in Canada is about ₹33 lakhs while in Australia it is around ₹37 lakhs. Hence Canada is a wise choice when it comes to the cost efficiency. You can opt for Australia if money doesn’t concern you.

Ease of Living

Australia has consistently ranked amongst the top five nations in the World Ease of Living Index due to its high-level economic development, qualitative educational system, diverse society, and liberal educational system, Australia provides better quality of living. But Canada is not a bit less in comparison. It is a diverse country with a glorious and vibrant economy. Yet, Canada stands out when compared on the basis of affordability and social services.

Job Opportunities

Australia and Canada offer innumerable job opportunities to the candidates. They are known to have stable economies. Their rate of unemployment is quite low in comparison to their peers. Mostly they depend on the various jobs that are in demand in a particular country. Professionals who are in good demand in Canada are program analysts, pharmacists, financial managers, construction managers, etc. Professionals who are in good demand in Australia are lawyers, core sector engineers, aircraft ground staff, operations and maintenance staff, bankers and financial managers, miners, and bio-technician.

Canada offers a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) for three years to its students where they can work after their studies and gain experience in the Canadian job market. They further become eligible for Permanent Residency after a minimum of two years of experience. There is also a provision where a Canadian employer can endorse a candidate through the Federal Skilled Worker Program. You can also get a post-study work permit of two to four years in Australia that depends on the skill set and qualification acquired.

Ease of Immigration

Australia and Canada are happily welcoming its immigrants. Because of its highly developed economies and sparse populations, there is a great demand for high and medium-skilled workers in both countries. While considering the processing time of visa and Permanent Residency applications, Canada is ahead of Australia. Both these countries follow a pointer system for immigration.

Australia offers Permanent Residency (PR) after a minimum of three to four years of work experience.Yet getting a Permanent Residency in Australia can be complicated due to its tedious and long processes. The Canadian government has a lenient immigration policy. You are eligible for a PR after two years of work experience in Canada. Your application can be fast-tracked with your employer’s support.

Climate

The climate in the two countries seems to be different. The northern part of Canada is extremely cold, with summer lasting less than two months, but almost all Canadians live near the southern border where the weather is warmer. The climate around Vancouver, on Canada’s west coast, is rainy and temperate. It rarely snows except in the mountains. Winters are cold and snowy while summers are hot and humid. High temperatures in summer are around 26° and in winter 0°.

The northern section of Australia has a more tropical influenced climate, hot and humid in the summer, and quite warm and dry in the winter, while the southern parts are cooler with mild summers and cool, sometimes rainy winters. The seasons are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere – when it’s summer in the north, it’s winter south of the equator. December and January are the hottest months in Australia, July and August the coldest.

Hence opt for Canada if you are acclimatized to winters and select Australia if you like sunshine and summer.

Client Testimonial

MBBS Abroad is a big decision and your success depends upon the honesty of your consultant. It is a long process starting from choosing the right college to reaching there at college door step and finally studying there for next 5-6 years. You are in a new country without many old friends. We were sure to approach a consultant who is based out of our district only so that not only during admission but for next 6 years, we can have smooth interactions. So, we approached GKWorks as they have a branch in Saharanpur. As we anticipated, there are lot of things to be done during admission process that goes for 3-4 months. At every step, it was useful for us to have our consultant who was only 20 minutes’ drive from our home. We were able to discuss everything face to face any day and thus were able to have easy process.
