Medical students against the new rule of internship
As per the new guideline of the NMC , the medical students will be allowed to do medical internship only from the college they have done their bachelors. And students will not be able to become intern in other institutions .
Before the release of this decision by the NMC , the medical students were able to do internship from any other institute and also had the option to move to major cities and look for good opportunities there. But due to this decision taken by the NMC students are not satisfied and a case was filed against this in Gujarat.
The goal behind this decision taken by NMC was to stop students moving to major cities and huge institutions for internship and providing their precious service to the rural area hospitals or rural colleges, as the rural area faces shortage of medical staff and good doctors. Also many students also think of doing PG and prepare for exams like NEET PG , so in search of good coaching institute for the preparation many students decide to move to the major cities and hence not opting for internship in the rural hospitals.
Although students are not ready to accept this new rule and demanded for allowing the externship again .Externship means taking transfer to other institutes and they stated that very less students go for externship so, they should be allowed to do this.
Why Externship?
Most of the students want to prepare for PG course and for the related entrance exam so, they choose externship a better option so as to find a good city and institute where they can do internship and in these major cities good coaching classes are also available where the students can go to prepare for the entrance exam. Mostly , the student takes NOC from their college and go to place where they want to settle .
Many students said, that going for PG is their only motive to move from rural to major city.
Due the Covid-19 pandemic ,many students had to drop out their idea to move to cities for internship and they continued in the rural area colleges and hospital ,Also the online classes in the time of pandemic were very helpful for the students preparing for NEET PG , they were in contact with the good coaching classes and were also able to manage their internship .
Reasons of students going to place near to their home states :
For taking admission into MBBS course , students have to appear for the NEET exam and according to the results students get college. The colleges either central level colleges for are the state level colleges and most of the students do not get college in their home states. So , for getting internship students prefer to get one near their home state or the place near to their house so , that they can focus on both studies and internship together .
Also, in the rural area students do not get proper facilities in hospitals and are not able to learns things practically due to lack of equipment ,staff, facilities . So students feel better to have an internship near the place they and hence move to major cities.
The rural hospitals sometimes also lacks presence of good surgeons only less experienced one’s are there so , students also do not get opportunity to learn for an experienced surgeons and go to cities.
Moreover, there are students who have to work 24 hours in the internship in the rural areas and then also are not paid or sometimes paid so less even after working so hard whereas in the good institutes students are paid well and have to work in shifts , No 24 hours of service.
Problems faced by rural hospital due to externship of students:
In many states like Gujarat, where almost 30 colleges are there , and most of these colleges are either tier 2 or tier 3 so if these new doctor interns are transferring to the urban locations so what about the rural hospitals who will work there ,so the government had to make this new rule go the betterment of medical facilities in the rural areas .
Also ,if there are 50 students passed as interns and 25 move to urban area then all those remaining one’s have to work for 2X work duration which can exceed to 24 hours in a day of work ,which is really very hectic.
Who should decide whether to allow students to go to urban area for internship:
Although the students believe that the NMC decision is not the way to deal with the problem of short staff at rural hospitals.
The students demanded:
It should be as per the local administration , they should decide if the students should be allowed to go to different institutes in urban areas as per the current necessity of staff needed in the rural area hospitals.
Or, it should be the dean of college who should decide whether the patient load is enough to get managed by the rest of the students who are not leaving the rural area.

Best thing about Vivek Gupta Sir is his selfless counselling. As I am already a BSC/ MSC, he suggested me to go to Philippines as I was able to get straight admission into MD and this finishes my entire course in 4 years flat. In any other country, it would have taken by 5.5-6 years. Ms Kanimojhi in Chennai office of GKWorks was equally supportive in coordination regarding documents, departure and all other formalities.
We live 100 Km’s away from Varanasi. The internet connection in our town is very weak and my parents are not that educated. For us, understanding the word RTGS was also very difficult. Thanks to Amit Pandey Sir, who is Gkworks Varanasi incharge, he helped us to do all small things. Going with us to get forex to helping us doing RTGS for fee payment, he was always there with us. He only helped us to apply for passport online and went with us to passport office Varanasi. Such support at ground level was provided by GKworks team both in Varanasi and Delhi.
My parents were not very comfortable to send me abroad especially my mother as I am the only son of my parents. I really wanted to become a doctor and thus approached Hemant Mishra Sir, director of Bareilly branch of GKWorks. He went out of his way to convince my mother. He would have come 5 times to my home, invited us to his office and home 10 times before my mother was finally convinced. It is only due to Hemant Sir in Bareilly that I am pursuing my course today. I wish GKworks and especially Bareilly branch all the very best to help many more students for their life dreams.
