MCI team assessing the readiness of new medical colleges to offer MBBS

On Monday morning, the three-member team started inspection of government medical college Doda. The team checked infrastructure of the college, the faculty and other staff in place and the readiness of the hospital associated with the medical college.

Currently, a team from the medical council of India (MCI) is on the visit to new five medical colleges in the state to inspect and assess their readiness for offering admission to MBBS course this academic year.

On Wednesday, the team is expected to visit the two new medical colleges in Anantnag and Baramulla, after visiting GMC Kathua and GMC Rajouri. Usually, the inspection takes up all the colleges for inspection in the same visit.

The council would conclude all inspections before 15 April in order to pave way for issuing a letter of permission to the upcoming medical colleges to admit the first batches of 100 students each through National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

At medical colleges, Anantnag and Baramulla the basic requirements for starting the first batch of students of MBBS have been completed. They have completed their temporary classrooms, laboratories, and library, hopefully, MCI would let them go-aheadThe permanent buildings of the medical colleges are expected to get completed by the end of 2019.

The upcoming medical colleges have recently submitted the compliance report of the shortcomings pointed out by the council during its visit in December last year. However, there still are “minor shortfalls” which are expected to be addressed in the coming few months. In a few medical colleges, they do not have any faculty for physiology and anatomy which is a basic requirement.

Maybe MCI gets “lenient” this time and allows the colleges to take the first batch. The five medical colleges were allotted to J&K in 2014, each with a funding component of Rs 189 crores.
