The Union Health Minister, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, addressed the Lok Sabha that India now has 612 medical colleges with an admission potential of 91,927 MBBS seats.
From the previous year’s 83,275 seats in 558 medical schools, the aggregate has climbed by 8,652 MBBS seats in 54 institutes.
During a recent Lok Sabha question hour, the Health Minister was requested to provide information on the number of MBBS seats granted to the government as well as private medical schools in the country, as well as the institutes established in the previous five years. Dr. Heena Gavit and Dr. Shrikant Eknath Shinde likewise wanted to know if seats at current medical colleges in various states were going to be increased, and what actions the government was planning to take to meet the country’s doctor shortage.
In response to the questions, the Minister submitted detailed statistics to the parliament on the overall amount of MBBS seats available in the country’s government and the private sector medical institutions at the time. According to the data, the state of Tamil Nadu now has the most MBBS seats available, with a total of 10,725 seats available for individuals seeking admission into 70 medical institutions. Karnataka comes in second with 10,145 places in 63 medical institutions. Maharashtra has a total of 9,895 MBBS seats spread over 62 institutes, whereas Uttar Pradesh has a total of 9,053 seats spread across 67 medical colleges.
Gujarat is next on the list, with 5,700 MBBS seats, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 5,335 and Kerala has 4,225 MBBS seats in each of the three states’ 31 medical institutions. Telangana boasts 34 medical colleges, with 5,040 MBBS seats available for admission this year, and more are on the way.
West Bengal comes in second with 4,225 MBBS seats in 27 medical institutions. Madhya Pradesh has 25 establishments with 4,080 seats, whereas Rajasthan has 26 colleges with 4,005 MBBS seats.
Bihar has 20 medical schools with 2,415 MBBS seats, Odisha has 13 institutes with 2,125 seats, Punjab and Haryana each have 12 health centers with 1,750 and 1,660 MBBS seats, while Puducherry has 9 medical colleges with 1,630 available seats.
While Chattisgarh, like Punjab and Haryana, has 12 medical institutions, it only has 1,565 MBBS seats. Delhi has ten institutes with a total of 1,497 MBBS seats. Assam and Jharkhand each have nine medical institutions with 1150 and 930 MBBS seats, respectively, while Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh each have eight institutes with 1150 and 920 seats.
Manipur has 375 MBBS seats in three institutes while Tripura has 225 MBBS seats in two medical colleges.
Goa has 180 MBBS seats, Chandigarh has 150 seats, Dadra and Nagar Haveli has 150 seats, Sikkim has 150, Andaman and Nicobar Islands has 100, Mizoram has 100, Arunachal Pradesh has 50 MBBS seats, and Meghalaya has 50 MBBS seats.
Seats granted under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Upgrading Existing Government Medical Colleges in India to Increase MBBS Seats:
The Minister also informed Parliament that 3495 MBBS seats have been authorized under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Upgradation of Existing Government Medical Colleges in order to expand the number of MBBS seats in the country.
Seats are granted under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for “Trying to strengthen and Upgrading of Governmental Medical And dental colleges for Starting New Postgraduate Disciplines and Increasing Postgraduate Seats”
In two phases, 5930 seats (4058 PG medical seats in Phase I and 1872 seats in Phase II) have been sanctioned in 22 States/UTs under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Bolstering and up-gradation of State Government medical institutions for beginning new PG disciplines and expanding PG seats’.
According to the Minister, around 1000 postgraduate seats have been made available underneath the Central Sector Scheme for “Upgradation of Government Medical College through the Construction of Super Specialty Blocks.”
Dr. Mandaviya also discussed the different efforts that the government has made to boost the accessibility of Undergraduate and Postgraduate Seats:-
iii. Central Sector Scheme for “Upgrading Government Medical College by Building Super Specialty Blocks” 75 projects have been authorized in total.
vii. Raising the age restriction for appointment/extension/re-employment in medical colleges to 70 years for teachers/deans/principals/directors.
