79627 MBBS SEATS IN 536 MEDICAL COLLEGES: HEALTH MINISTER PROVIDES BREAKUP TO PARLIAMENT
Currently there are 79627 MBBS seats in about 276 government medical colleges and 260 private medical colleges. So, there are about 536 medical colleges operating in the country.
This information was given by the MOS Health to the parliament regarding the questions of total number of medical colleges both private and government in the country. State-wise allocation of seats for the MBBS course in various states was also provided by the minister.
Karnataka again topped the list as it has highest number of medical colleges i.e. 59 with a total of 9145 annual intakes in the MBBS courses. There are total of 19 government colleges and 40 private colleges in the state.
In terms of number of colleges, the second position is bagged by Uttar Pradesh with a total of 55 medical colleges out of which 24 are government colleges and 31 are private colleges which adds around 7525 MBBS seats to the total number of seats for the MBBS courses.
On the other hand, the third position is bagged by Maharashtra which have a smaller number of colleges than Uttar Pradesh but have a greater number of MBBS seats. The state has around 52 medical colleges out of which 24 are government medical colleges and 28 are private medical colleges having around 4270 seats for MBBS courses.
Tamil Nadu holds fourth position with 26 government medical colleges having 3400 seats and 23 private colleges with 3750 medical seats. The highest number of doctors practicing allopathy are from Maharashtra. There are about 1,73,384 doctors who are registered with medical council of India as on 31 March,2019.
As per the data on 31 march 2019, there are 11,59,309 doctors registered with state medical council/medical council of India. Maharashtra have highest number of doctors registered with MCI followed by Tamil Nadu holding second position with total of 1,35,456 doctors. Third position is bagged by Karnataka with 1,22,875 doctors registered.
